Originating in the Caribbean, most notably Jamaica, using pineapple peel in tea is believed to have a variety of health benefits. While the traditional version includes various types of citrus and sugar. My version is slightly varied with a Healthyish twist.

Health Benefits of Pineapple Peel Infused Tea

Pineapple peel is known for having a high concentration of bromelain, which is an anti-inflammatory enzyme that can potentially reduce pain in joints caused from osteoarthritis. Some studies suggest that pineapple peel can fight inflammation, help restore the gut and even potentially lower the risk of some cancers. To read more on these studies, click here.

Additionally, according to Science Direct, “Bromelain exhibits antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-thrombotic, anticoagulative and anti-edematous properties. Pineapple Peel Infused Tea – Healthyish Foods

Ingredients Needed for Pineapple Peel Tea

  • Pineapple Peel and Core – You’ll need the peel and core from one pineapple for this recipe. Once you remove the outer peel, rinse and scrub each section before boiling the peels in a pot of water. You can also slice the core in half if it is very large.
  • Ginger – This recipe calls for a knob of fresh ginger.
  • Turmeric – This recipe calls for fresh turmeric. Be sure to slice the turmeric in half so it releases its essence.
  • Lemon – You’ll need one lemon for this recipe. Remove the ends and slice.
  • Mint – This recipe calls for a handful of fresh mint.
  • Honey – To sweeten the tea, add about two teaspoons of honey.
  • Tea bags – For this recipe, I used two French Lemon Ginger tea bags from Art of Tea.
  • Hot Water – You’ll pour the boiling water from the pineapple peels over the other ingredients to form the tea.

How to Make Pineapple Peel Infused Tea

For this pineapple peel infused tea recipe we are using the peel and the core from the pineapple. Remove the peel using a knife. Rinse and scrub the peel vigorously to remove any bacteria. Then add the peels to a pot and cover them with water. Boil for 15-20 minutes.

While the peels are boiling, grab your 40-ounce Teabloom tea kettle. Add the fresh ginger, sliced lemon, fresh turmeric, fresh mint, honey, two French lemon ginger tea bags, half of the pineapple core, and two of the hot pineapple peels from the boiling water. Use a strainer and pour the boiling pineapple infused water over the rest of the ingredients. Steep for 10 minutes and enjoy warm or over ice for a refreshing iced tea. Best enjoyed the same day.

Equipment

  • 1 Teabloom kettle comes in 27 and 40-ounce sizes
  • 1 bowl rinse peels
  • 1 vegetable scrubber to scrub peels
  • 1 pot boil peels
  • 1 strainer

Ingredients

  • 1 pineapple, peel and core
  • 1 knob ginger, fresh
  • 1 lemon, remove ends and slice
  • 1 piece turmeric, fresh, slice in half
  • 1 handful mint, fresh
  • 2 teaspoons honey, depending on preferred sweetness
  • 2 tea bags , Art of Tea, French Lemon Ginger
  • 3-5 cups boiling pineapple infused water, see directions
