Healthy Homemade Dog Treats – Healthyish Foods

Ingredients – You’ll need rolled oats, homemade unsalted peanut butter, carrots, and bananas for this recipe. I use Bob’s Red Mill Organic rolled oats and they work perfectly. I also made my own homemade peanut butter which is great because it doesn’t have palm oil, sugars or other ingredients that can upset a dog’s belly. Recipe for the peanut butter below.

How to Make Healthy Homemade Dog Treats

Preheat the oven 350 degrees. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and set it aside.

Make the Homemade Peanut Butter

Add 12-ounces of unsalted peanuts to the food processor. Buzz until smooth and creamy, no lumps. Takes about 3-5 minutes. You’ll only need ½ cup for this recipe. Extra peanut butter can be used as needed. Store extra peanut butter in an airtight container.

Make the Cookie Dough

Next, clean the food processor and add the rolled oats, bananas, carrot, and homemade peanut butter. Blend until a sticky dough forms.

Cut the Cookies

Lightly dust your work surface with oat flour or another dog friendly flour and add the dough. Dust the top of the dough with some oat flour as well. Roll out the dough with a rolling pin. Use the Easter themed cookie cutters to cut your cookies or you could use any cookie cutter you have handy.

Bake the Cookies

Place the cookies on the prepared baking tray. Bake for 14-16 minutes. 16 minutes yields a slightly crispier cookie. However, these cookies do tend to be on the softer side. They will also firm up a touch as they cool. If you opt to use the silicone bone mold instead of the cookie cutter bake for 18-20 minutes. Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool before giving them to your dog.

Storage

Store in an airtight bag at room temperature for 3-4 days. Option to store these cookies in an airtight bag in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks. Or you can freeze the cookies in an airtight bag for up to 2 months. Freezing makes the cookies a little crispier which dog seems to love too!
