Healthyish New Year 2019
It’s that time of year when we all decide to eat “right” and jump on the latest wellness bandwagon. We force ourselves to hit the gym three times a week, chug green drinks, and refrain from anything indulgent.
But if you’ve been following our account, then you already know that this goes against the grain of the Healthyish philosophy. Which is why I feel inclined to re-share our belief system behind being Healthyish, and how living Healthyish is truly a lifestyle versus another fad diet or trend.
The core of being Healthyish is about enjoying life, embracing your successes and failures and finding balance in all that you do. This includes everything from your personal and professional life, and travels all the way down to your daily diet and exercise plan.
It’s about NOT depriving yourself from the foods you love or the activities you enjoy. But rather learning how sensibly indulge so that your entire life is impacted positively.
For example, I’d love to shop online all day BUT it probably wouldn’t be great for my bank account OR my marriage. Haha! Or as you already know, I love dessert but eating an entire tray of brownies or finishing off an entire cake isn’t going to make me feel good about myself. It’s ALL about moderation, portion control and allowing yourself to celebrate life’s little victories without the side of guilt.
So, before you dive head first into an unrealistic New Year’s Resolution that has you doing jumping jacks every 5 minutes, eating egg whites and lemons- try this instead.
Sit down and think about what you are currently eating and doing on a daily basis. Then think about ways you can tweak those patterns so that your life has more balance and you’re feeling better both physically and mentally.
For example, if you’re feeling really tired try setting out your work clothes the night before, drinking more water throughout your day, and shutting down all electronics at least an hour before bed.
Or if your goal is to lose weight. Evaluate your activity level and what you’re eating on a daily basis. Try making healthy substitutes that will help you reach your goal. Like veggies instead of chips or water instead of pop. But whatever you do, do not deprive yourself from the OCCASIONAL indulgence. I’m not a nutritionist, but I am a firm believer that when you deprive your body from the occasional treat then you are setting yourself up for failure.
Being Healthyish is the equivalent to having a salad at lunch and a slice of pizza for dinner and knowing that it all evens out. Notice I said a SLICE of pizza – not 6 slices!
The goal to living a Healthyish lifestyle, is knowing that everything is good in moderation. Whether that’s wheat pasta, red meat, or wine! Proper portions and moderation are the key to being Healthyish.
So, whatever your goals are as we head into the New Year just remember to be kind to yourself. And little tweaks can go a really long way!
