One of my first jobs was as a hostess at the Fox and Hound restaurant in North Hills. I eventually worked my way up to a waitress, but every time I had a shift, I always ordered their Black Forest Sandwich.

Their version of this sandwich was made from shaved turkey, bacon, lettuce, and tomato. It was topped with honey mustard dressing and loaded on a pretzel bun. Served warm, this sandwich was hard to beat. So, I knew I would have to recreate a version for you guys to enjoy!

About Black Forest Ham

The black forest sandwich is traditionally made from Black Forest ham. The ham was given this name because it was originally manufactured in Black Forest, Germany. Black Forest ham is a dry-cured smoked ham that has a very distinctive black skin. The black skin is what gives it its unique smoky flavor and appearance. So, to keep things on the more traditional side, I opted for black forest ham in this recipe. Trust me guys, once you try this sandwich you’ll be hooked!

Ingredients Needed for this Black Forest Sandwich

  • Meat – You’ll need three slices of Black Forest ham for this recipe.
  • Toppings – Shredded lettuce and sliced tomato work best for this recipe.
  • Bun – I strongly suggest using a pretzel bun for this sandwich. It adds so much flavor and texture. Just be sure to toast it first. Option to smear the inside of the bun with butter and lightly pan fry it until it is golden brown.
  • Cheese – Swiss cheese tastes amazing with this sandwich. However, provolone would work well too.
  • Honey Mustard – Be sure to add the homemade honey mustard to this sandwich. Extra dressing can be stored covered in the refrigerator for three to four days.

How to Make a Black Forest Sandwich

Make the Dressing

Combine mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, honey, apple cider vinegar, kosher salt, and paprika in a small mixing bowl. Mix until well combined.

Make the Sandwich

Slice the pretzel bun in half and smear the inside with butter. Toast it ( butter side down) in a warm skillet until golden brown. Remove from the pan and set aside.

In the same nonstick skillet, heat the ham slices and top it with a slice of Swiss cheese. Once the cheese is melted on top of the ham, add it to the bottom of the pretzel bun. Top with shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes and homemade honey mustard dressing. Serve hot and enjoy.

How to Store

Best served immediately. Extra dressing can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-6 days.
