Father’s Day is this weekend, so here’s a Father’s Day Cocktail for the dad who is classic but doesn’t take himself too seriously.
We’re riffing off a classic cocktail- the Sazerac– a staple from one of America’s cultural hot beds, New Orleans. Except we’re adding extra chill because this father’s day, we’re playing it cool (like dad used to be). Plus, we’re baking up desserts to play up our dads’ sweet sides.
A proper Sazerac is a mix of whiskey, absinthe, sugar and the key ingredient- Peychaud’s Bitters- the bright red bitters with slight hints of cherry, clove and nutmeg. Absinthe can be harder to come by and heavier on the wallet, so for this Father’s Day cocktail, we’re going with absinthe’s pinch hitter (or absinthe’s lower-alcohol-content kid brother, if you will)- Pernod, an anise flavored liqueur.
If your dad is a Sazerac drinker, then he’s no stranger to anise’s polarizing licorice flavor. With a few quick steps, you can transform a simple Mellow Yellow or Tangy Lemon Healthyish Cake into a Sazerac Cake to complement dad’s cocktail.
Right after removing your Healthyish cakes from the oven, poke the surfaces using a cake tester or a toothpick, then top with a splash of whiskey. The whiskey will seep into the cake and infuse it with that oaky flavor. Though the heat will tone down the alcohol content, the cakes will still pack a little punch (so don’t share with kiddos). Then, for that characteristic licorice flavor, drizzle with a Pernod Glaze (recipe below).
To keep the Father’s Day festivities cool, we’re blending Sazerac ingredients with ice for a frostier and more refreshing take on the classic. Keep that blender blending, so Dad can kick up his feet and enjoy his day. If you’re firing up the grill for dad, don’t forget to grill up some extra fruit for dessert too!
